In response to the Problem of Evil, some theists say this:

A huge portion of the many trillions of cases of horrific suffering are justified by our knowledge of the difference between good and evil. That is, there had to be a huge portion of that suffering so we could gain that exceedingly valuable knowledge. You can’t really know the difference between good and evil—in fact, maybe you can’t really know what good and evil even are—unless you have a vivid awareness of both of them in all their glory. And without that knowledge, you’re spiritually unenlightened or not in intimate contact with God or suffer some other very bad defect. So the knowledge in question turns out to be extremely valuable and worth the pain.
